'LA' Movimiento is right back at you for a second run of what is HOT in Latin Music. As I promised in the last edition, I have new music by a familiar face, a TUN from Puerto Rico and a few more things that you are sure to enjoy.
It wasn't that long ago, that I can remember hearing a cover to a Juan Gabriel song in salsa. The vocals were strong and powerful and every lyric was heartfelt and each note was a perfect compliment to what the singer was feeling. That song was "Hasta Que Te Conoci" and the artist was none other than the incomparable Marc Anthony, who had before that recorded "Ride To The Rhythm" with Little Louie Vega. This all brings me to a strange feeling of deja-vu that happened to me recently. I was in my car when I turned the radio on to Mega 97.9 FM in NY and heard the lyrics, "Ya lo se, que tu te vas. Y quizas no volveras." emerge. I was immediately drawn as the song captured my attention and continued to as it progressed through the break, the coro and the soneos.
At the end of the song I figured out who that undeniably unique voice was, George Lamond! From "Bad Of The Heart" to "Ya Lo Se Que Tu Te Vas"; what a transition. Well it wasn't that drastic, George had done some coro (chorus) work for Jerry Rivera a couple of years ago on the hit single, "Recordare", off of the album Fresco. This single, which was shrunken to "Que te Vas", was arranged by Miguel Bonilla, who was the mastermind behind D'Mingo's "Rumba" smash single from last spring. Along with the fabulous arrangement, George proves that he is salsa's next rising star. My congratulations to John "Gungie" Rivera in making a perfect choice in making George the first artist to be released under the new label, Prestigio Recordings, a division of Prestige Productions Look for a full review of George Lamond's entire CD, "Entrega", as well as an exclusive interview in a future issue of 'LA'Ritmo.com. "Entrega" will be in a store near you on June 15th. (hint: the album has arrangements by Miguel Bonilla, Luis Carbacas, Ricky Gonzalez and Sergio George). [RealAudio Soundclip: "Que te Vas"]
On the merengue tip, watch out for Tonny Tun Tun on Caiman Music. Tonny Tun Tun, "El Moreno" as he refers to himself, has teamed up with the same team that is behind the infamous Elvis Crespo. In fact, Tonny Tun Tun's 1st single and title track, "Caminando", was written by Tonny Tun Tun & Mr. Suavemente. The song is extremely contagious and will have you dancing right from the get. Watch for Tonny to make huge strides internationally as he is already doing in Puerto Rico (en todas sus fiestas patronales / festivals that the patrons in each town sponsor which take place during the summer months). Four, Three, Two, One and here we have 24K/Sonolux recording artist, Mannikkmio, with their sophomore release, "Mannikkomio International". The group is still sporting their look of ski masks and no shirts (like JASON on steroids; just kidding!). The 1st single is "Lokko Enamorados". The song has an excellent swing and a catchy lyric. The swing is a bit similar to the last album which I gave praise to in packing more than a few of my dance floors. The group is also great live in getting the crowd, especially the ladies, involved in the show. With this record, I expect them to do the same. [RealAudio Soundclip: "Lokko Enamorados"]
On the dance tip, Sonolux records brings us a slammin' track by Charlie Zaa. What you say? Is this a misprint? NO, it wasn't. Charlie Zaa "THE REMIXES" courtesy of DJ Lucho are the BOMB! The remix is of "Un Disco Mas" from Charlie's "Sentimientos" CD. You can quote me that "This Remix will pack any dance floor from NY to Argentina and any spanish speaking country" . That's it for this edition but come back next issue for new music from Puerto Rican Power and much more.
